Bees loan duo ease squad shortage

By Stuart Amos »

Brentford boss Uwe Rosler has admitted to fears the current cold snap will end up stretching his squad to breaking point.

The Griffin Park chief signed Watford’s Northern Ireland international defender Adam Thompson and West Bromwich Albion’s 18-year-old striker Saido Berahino on loan this week.

Saturday’s visit of Oldham Athletic is subject to a pitch inspection today and is very much in doubt, with temperatures expected to plunge further over the weekend.

Coupled with last week’s cancellation at Preston North End it will leave Brentford facing up to a brutal run of 13 games in six weeks.

And with centre backs Karleigh Osborne and Marcel Eger still struggling to return to full fitness, Rosler was mindful of where his shortages still lay.

“March is going to be a decisive month for us, particularly with such a small squad,” said the manager.

“Fortunately most of the squad is fit at the moment.

“There will be plenty of rotation and players, who have not had that much game time, will have the chance to prove me wrong.

“It is going to be hard because we will have a game every three days.

“We’ve got two more bodies in which is good, but there are areas I am still looking to strengthen.”

Thompson, 19, returns to the club from the Hornets having enjoyed a successful 10-game loan spell at Griffin Park earlier in the campaign.

Berahino, who is on a youth loan contract until the end of the season, has recently been on loan at League Two Northampton Town where he scored six goals in 15 starts.
