1:00pm Friday 9th December 2011 in Brentford By Stuart Amos
Bees winger Sam Saunders has told the Brentford boo boys the players feel their pain and are working hard to put things right.
Boss Uwe Rosler’s men crashed out of the FA Cup on Saturday with a 1-0 defeat to Blue Square Premier leaders Wrexham – a result that was greeted with a chorus of jeers at Griffin Park.
Things did not get better on Tuesday night when the Bees saw their interest in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy ended after a penalty shoot-out at League Two Barnet – a game Rosler’s men had dominated for long periods.
The Bees had the full backnig of more than 800 fans at Underhill and Saunders hopes that continues as Brentford bid to maintain their assault on the League One play-offs.
“It is sickening to be out of both cup competitions within three days, but we have to use the negativity and disappointment to fire us up for the league,” he said ahead of Saturday’s visit of Hartlepool.
“Hopefully, the fans stick with us. We are doing our best and the fans were fantastic on Tuesday. It felt like we were the home team.
“Some fans have been getting on with booing and we feel their frustration more than anyone. We’re out there grafting every day.
“I see the workrate of everyone from the kitman, to the management, to the players and to the physios. Everyone is pushing in the same direction and trying to get results.
“We’re seventh in the league. That is all we’ve got to concentrate on and it is down to us to get where we want to be.”
Midfielder Jonathan Douglas missed the crucial shoot-out penalty on Tuesday – after the match had finished 0-0 – but boss Rosler has backed his man to bounce back from the disappointment.
But it seems it might take Saunders, Brentford’s most effective player on the night, a little longer to come to terms with the defeat.
“I’m absolutely gutted,” he added.
“We’ve done it the hard way in beating MK Dons and Charlton to get here and this was a great opportunity to get to Wembley again.
“Last year it was a great day – despite the result – and I’ll never forget that so to lose on penalties is a sickener.”
