It was a five minutes to remember for Brentford’s Scott Hogan, and boss Dean Smith could not be happier for his striker - eventually.
Hogan, in only his fourth appearance since returning from long-term injury, and his Bees team-mates were 1-0 down at home to Bristol City and heading for a first Championship defeat in four games.
However, with four minutes remaining, Bees were awarded a penalty only for the Robins keeper Richard O’Donnell to save Hogan’s spot-kick.
Undeterred, the 24-year-old former Rochdale man, who had been on the treatment table since August 2014, popped up in stoppage time to score his first goal in two years, salvage a point and keep the Bees 13th in the table.
Smith told BBC Radio London: “I'm really pleased for him. He got a well-deserved round of applause in the dressing room.
“He could easily have been distraught after missing the penalty, but he wasn't.
"He snapped up a chance right at the death. That is one for him, his family and all the medical team who have nursed him back to full fitness."
He added: “He's a lot stronger player than I saw at Rochdale, he's a natural finisher and that's why the club went and got him. I certainly couldn't have afforded him at Walsall."
Brentford host Cardiff City tomorrow night.
