Brentford's head of medical Neil Greig says there is no time scale on stricken midfielder Alan Judge's recovery from a broken leg, but he is in the best possible hands.

The 27-year-old underwent surgery on Monday night to repair a broken leg suffered following a tackle from Ipswich Town's Luke Hyam during Saturday's 3-1 win at the Tractor Boys.

Hyam, who was later sent off for a second bookable offence, was only given a yellow card for the horror challenge that boss Dean Smith felt was deserving of a straight red.

Judge had been odds on to be part of the Republic of Ireland squad heading to this summer's European Championships, but instead will embark on an extensive rehabilitation programme.

He has vowed to return a stronger and better player and Greig has backed his man to the hilt.

"Following a fracture injury to his lower leg during Saturday's game, Alan last night (Monday) underwent successful surgery to repair the injury and will now begin the early stages of recovery," he said in a statement issued by the club.

"Whilst the injury is clearly significant, Alan has been placed under the care of the leading lower limb consultant in the country, whose experience in managing such injuries in unparalleled.

"As such, there is every confidence that we will achieve a positive outcome.

"Alan is a determined character and I have no doubt that he will commit fully to the challenge of returning fitter and stronger than before.

"He will continue to receive the fullest support from the outstanding group of medical and conditioning staff at Brentford during what is clearly a difficult time for him and his family.

"It is too early to speculate on recovery timescales at this stage and we will provide further information as we are able to."
