Bees head coach Dean Smith reckoned going for the win cost his side a draw at Birmingham City on Saturday, but he would not have had it any other way.

Brentford opened the new year with a narrow 2-1 defeat at St Andrews after Maikel Kieftenbeld bundled in the winner for the Blues two minutes from time.

Bees substitute Phillip Hofmann stabbed home a 77th minute equaliser after Jacques Maghoma had given the hosts a 55th minute advantage.

But Kieftenbeld stole the points as the Bees pressed for a winner to leave Smith disappointed with the result, but not the performance.

"It's disappointing because for long spells I thought we were the better team," said Smith.

Positive move: Dean Smith was happy his side went for the win rather than settle for the draw in Saturday's defeat at Birmingham City

"It's a compliment to us how deep Birmingham played. I think they felt if it was an open game we may have opened them up and scored a few goals.

"They probably scored against the run of play. It also got their supporters on their side. But then we got back into it and re-grouped.

"Judgey [Alan Judge] missed his chance, but then made the keeper spill one and Hof scored. I thought we were the only team trying to win from there and unfortunately got undone at the end.

"I just said to the players I'm disappointed, but I'm happy we lost the game trying to win. We didn't want to settle for a point."

Brentford had the game's first chance, when Alan Judge curled a free kick just wide of the right hand post, notable for the fact that the Bees had lined up two mini walls in front of Birmingham's defensive wall.

Still struggling: Jota was a late withdrawal from Saturday's squad after picking up a slight calf strain in training last week

The visitors were dominating possession, but were unable to find a cutting edge during the opening hour.

Meanwhile, in defence, James Tarkowski was masterful in getting the better of two Birmingham players as he brought the ball out of a tight spot by the corner flag.

After Judge exchanged passes with Jake Bidwell, he saw his shot from just inside the box cannon off a defender.

Birmingham's first, and only real, chance of the opening half came five minutes before the break when Paul Caddis crossed from the right and former Bee Jon Toral headed across goal and wide.

Nearly back: Alan McCormack returned to full training last week and is expected to be fit for Saturday's FA Cup third round visit of League One Walsall

Just before the break Judge swung over a teasing corner from the left which was just missed by everybody.

Toral was lucky to avoid being sent off when he scythed down Jake Bidwell on the edge of Brentford's box.

It didn't take Birmingham long to test David Button after the re-start, with Viv Solomon-Otabor firing into the keeper's hands.

At the other end Ryan Woods' long range effort was just wide of the right hand post. Shortly after, Vibe sent a shot wide of the same post from the left side of the box.

The home side took the lead ten minutes into the second half when they broke down the right and Jacques Maghoma accelerated past the Bees defence before firing a low shot past Button into the bottom left corner.

Lively: Alan Judge was again influential at Brimingham City and his good form is bound to attract attention during the January transfer window

After Toumani Diagouraga won the ball in the centre circle a beautifully timed pass set Judge free through the middle, but he wastefully fired high over the bar with just Tomasz Kuszczak to beat.

The Bees equalised when a long range drive from Judge was spilled by Kuszczak and Hofmann reacted quickest to steer the ball home from six yards.

A quick break down the right then saw Maxime Colin's cross steered wide by Hofmann as Brentford looked for the winner.

Yet with just two minutes left Birmingham took all three points when James Vaughan broke away down the left and his low cross to the back post was bundled home by Maikel Kieftenbeld.

Brentford: Button; Colin, Dean, Tarkowski, Bidwell; Swift (sub McEachran 70), Diagouraga, Woods, Judge, Canos (sub Gogia 80); Vibe (sub Hofmann 65).

Subs (not used): Bonham, O'Connell, Saunders, Yennaris.
