When Ks striker Alan Tait broke clear with five minutes left to score the winner against Metropolitan Police on Monday, he became the last man to celebrate a goal in front of the Kingston Road terrace at Kingsmeadow.

The bulldozers move in this week as AFC Wimbledon, Kingstonian’s landlords since buying the ground in 2003, start work on a 900-seat structure to replace the shallow standing area and low roof under which Kingstonian’s hardcore vocal support have gathered for two decades.

The Dons must upgrade the stadium to comply with Football League regulations.

That means more seats and less non-league informality.

For most Ks fans it was an afternoon of memories and regrets, confirmation that they are now outsiders occupying an oversized, league-standard ground and that AFC will not be moving to a new home any time soon.

"It’s a sad day for the supporters, we realise that," said manager Alan Dowson, who was nevertheless pleased to see his team pick up an Easter win to arrest a recent slide in form.

Kingstonian had taken the lead through the industrious Tait in the 10th minute, his crisp right-foot finish across the keeper completing a fine three-man move.

Met Police got themselves back into the game with 15 minutes remaining when Aaron Goode turned the ball into his own net before Tait took advantage of a Bobby Traynor pass to make it 2-1, giving the fans one last jubilant leap around the old stand.

The result leaves Ks in 10th position as the season edges to its conclusion.

Any lingering hopes of the top five were well and truly dashed at Wealdstone 48 hours earlier.

Playing with 10 men for an hour after Ian Gayle’s dismissal, Ks managed to make it 1-1 soon after half-time through yet another Traynor penalty, but then conceded three goals as the game stretched.

Dowson is now looking forward to a London Senior Cup semi-final to ensure the season can end on a high.

"We want to give the fans a cup to celebrate because it’s been a difficult year," he said.

Ks will play Hendon in the final at Imber Court on April 18 if they can get past Cray Wanderers tomorrow night at Kingsmeadow.
