Sutton United boss Paul Doswell has expressed his sympathy for Croydon Athletic’s current plight, but wants the Football Association to do more to clean up the game.
The Rams face the possibility of going out of business after owner Mazhar Majeed’s assets were frozen pending a criminal investigation into the betting scandal that has engulfed Pakistan cricket.
United had been due to face Croydon in the league next week, but the match has been postponed as Athletic fight for survival and Doswell reckons it is a situation that can’t be repeated.
“The manager and players did so well to get promoted last year. This is not their fault and I have every sympathy with them. It is amazing to think a world wide scandal is centred around a Ryman League club,” he said.
“The fit and proper person test is a standing joke in football and there are examples of why from this level and the Conference, right to the top.
“It is a major problem, but it will not stop because the FA don’t seem to really want to put the effort into addressing it.”
