Molesey struck four goals for the second successive Saturday - and it would have been more but for a man-of-the-match performance by Dorking player-manager Tony Webb, writes Andy Finch.

The former Leatherhead and Tooting & Mitcham keeper, an emergency stand-in, was aided by some last-ditch defending and the woodwork to prevent the Moles from racking up a cricket score.

Molesey went ahead after James McShane’s corner was only cleared as far as Ebrahim-Zadeh, whose sweetly-struck volley flew into the top corner.

Webb made the first of a number of terrific saves shortly afterwards when Arnold Tawonezvi got the better of Roy Newman and hit a goal-bound half volley from a tight angle which Webb – who was playing his first game for four years due to the unavailability of regular keeper Dan Coote – tipped over. From the resulting corner Tawonezvi saw a free header blocked.

Another corner moments later flashed across goal with Dan Coombes inches away from making contact, before McShane took a pass from Coombes with an outstanding first touch that took him beyond Charlie Merrick but Webb denied him at his near post.

From the next corner Tawonezvi thought he had double Molesey’s lead but the referee – who had a fine game – spotted that he had used his hand to bundle the ball across the line.

McShane was again denied by Webb with less than half hour played when a low, curling free kick from 35 yards evaded everyone and threatened to creep into the far corner but Webb reacted superbly to turn the ball around the post, before Webb made a rare mistake when he failed to hang onto Ebrahim-Zadeh’s cross. Sam Lampard thought he had scored but his strike was superbly headed off the line by Merrick.

Just a minute later both McShane and Lampard both came even closer to getting on the scoresheet, as McShane saw a drive from 25 yards come back of the underside of the bar. Lampard was first to the follow-up but was somehow thwarted by an amazing save by Webb, and the ball was somehow cleared to safety in the ensuing scramble.

Webb then took another corner off Tawonezvi’s head, and Dan Lucas fired high and wide after being set up by McShane.

The only attacking threat Dorking had provided was a weak free-kick from Martin Waldren midway through the half that Wester Young kept out despite an awkward bounce, however they came desperately close to equalising on the stroke of half-time during a prolonged goalmouth scramble when ex mole Andy Davidson and Joe Loyza both had efforts blocked en route to goal.

After the restart, McShane shot just wide from the edge of the box, Moses Spencer had a goal ruled out by a linesman’s flag and Tawonezvi’s goalbound effort was blocked on the line.

For the third time in the game the Moles were again denied by the woodwork when McShane hit a drive from just inside the box that clipped the top of the bar, then Ebrahim-Zadeh muscled past Merrick but was again denied by Webb.

Molesey got a deserved second goal midway through the half when McShane’s free kick was layed off by Spencer to Lampard, who slotted beyond Webb for his first goal of the season.

McShane linked up cleverly with Defoe before shooting into the side netting, Tawonezvi was again denied by Webb, before Lewis added Molesey’s third in the 84th minute when he scooped home a goalmouth scramble.

McShane finally got the goal his performance deserved in stoppage time when Graves made a burst into the box and was barged over. Webb very nearly spoilt his day by getting his hand to the penalty but was unable to keep it out.

Next up for the Moles is an intriguing clash against inconsistent Egham, who recently put eight past Dorking but were on the wrong end of a 4-0 scoreline themselves this weekend.
