Nothing beats a late winner and it was great to see the scenes on the terraces after Roarie Deacon’s goal, as Sutton United advanced to the first round of the FA Cup for the first time in three years.

Forest Green are probably the best side United have faced this season, so knocking them out to reach this stage brings a particular satisfaction.

The game itself provided excellent entertainment for the 751 spectators, it’s just a shame the actual numbers were so low.

Mind you a home draw in the next round will surely bring in a bumper crowd and I’m sure there’ll be many people looking forward to watching the draw live on TV on Monday evening.

Before the next round is played though, there’s a couple of important games coming up in the league against sides who sit below United in the league, starting with a long trip up to Southport on Saturday.

The Sandgrounders ended a recent bad run of form with a win over Chester on Saturday, and will prove another tough away test for United who need to end their run of away defeats soon.

The task will be made harder by the absence of Deacon and Eastmond, who are both suspended, but players such as Bradley Hudson-Odoi and Shaun Cooper will be desperate to come into the team and show what they can do.

Whoever the opposition, if Paul Doswell’s men play as well as they have been playing in the past couple of weeks a win is a very realistic target.
