Brentford new boy Ryan Woods impressed in his first Championship start on Tuesday, but head coach Lee Carsley would like a bit more.

The 21-year-old – dubbed ‘the ginger Pirlo’ – switched to the club from Shrewsbury Town on transfer deadline day, but had to wait until the 2-0 defeat to Birmingham City for his first start after three appearances from the bench.

Carsley had seen him play for the development squad in a 2-2 draw with Leeds United on September 22 and he was one of his team’s better performers on Tuesday.

But Woods’ new boss wants more.

“He played for me in the development squad the other day and that was the first time I’ve seen him. He is a good player,” said Carsley.

“He has a good variation of passing, but I’d like to see him play with a bit more risk and hit a through ball.

“Along with three or four other players.”

Brentford head to Derby County tomorrow in search of a third league win of the season that would help pull them clear of the bottom three.

Carsley will resist the temptation to dip in to the loan market to revive the club’s fortunes and believes he has the quality at his disposal to turn things around.

“There is a lot of good players at the club. There were two or three not in the squad on Tuesday who are more than capable of playing,” he said.

“Everyone needs to feel like they have a chance to play in the team. It is good for motivation in training “The first place you should look is inside the club.”
