Crystal Palace’s legendary striker Mark Bright hailed record signing Yohan Cabaye as possibly the best signing in the club’s history.

The Eagles splashed £10m on the French international last week in a deal that could rise to £13m with add-ons.

The signing was the club’s record transfer, eclipsing James McArthur’s £7m deal last year.

Bright also believes that sealing the 39-time capped Frenchman has marked the complete turnaround of a club that nearly went into liquidation in 2010, before the CPFC 2010 consortium came to the rescue.

He said: “I am absolutely delighted, if you’d have said five years ago that we would be signing a full French international that has played Champions League football, I would have said: ‘Good luck with that, here come the men in white jackets to take you away’.

“But it’s all about progression year on year, it’s got better every season and credit has got to go to CPFC 2010 for that.

“I know Steve Parish worked really hard on this deal and everyone around the club really wanted the player and wanted to make sure no one got to him first.

Cannot wait: Palace legend Mark Bright, with fellow Eagles hero Ian Wright, is excited about the signing of Yohan Cabaye

“Steve Alexander has dealt with some transfers in his time and he said it is the longest one he has dealt with in terms of the work he had to put into it.”

Bright added: “Euro 2016 is around the corner and for Yohan to come here is possibly the best signing in the club’s history.

“I cannot wait for him to get on the pitch and play.”

Bright, who is Palace’s fourth all-time record goalscorer with 113 goals, also said the signing will lift everyone involved with the club and Cabaye might not be the last big name player to sign.

“I know, as a player, if you sign someone of that quality it really lifts you - you want to be part of what’s going on.

“You don’t want to leave the club. You want to hear that you are also part of the plans.

“Steve said he is not the last to come in, so hopefully there will be others to follow and give the fans something to cheer and to continue our progression.”

The first opportunity for fans to see the Frenchman in Premier League action will be the trip to Norwich on August 8.
