Leatherhead’s unbeaten run in the Ryman Premier Division came to an end on Saturday, but boss Richard Brady just shrugged his shoulders.

The 3-1 defeat at Enfield Town ended a sequence of seven wins and a draw from the past eight games.

However, the manner of the defeat, which also saw Tanners leading goalscorer Kiernan Hughes-Mason sent off, left Brady in bemusement.

The key moments came just before the break when winger Vas Karagiannis missed a golden chance to give Tanners the lead.

Then, during half-time one of the assistant referees withdrew due to injury, and an Enfield back room staff member took the flag at the end Tanners were defending.

Brady, pictured, said: “It was a strange game.

“We should have been 1-0 up at the break, and when their guy took over the line, it all got a bit Sunday League.

“So many times we never knew if their strikers were on-side or off-side, and when defenders don’t know what a linesman is going to do they don’t know whether to stick or twist, push up or drop back.

“I asked the ref why Enfield’s man was being allowed to run the end they were attacking, but he just told me he knew what he [the ref] was doing.

“By all accounts one of their goals was yards off-side, but football is football.

“There’s nothing you can do about it apart from pack up, and move on to the next game.”

He added: “It is perhaps the only sport where there is no fairness or sincerity.

“Enfield got away with one on Saturday, and they say ‘That’s that, we got the points although we perhaps shouldn’t have’.

“That doesn’t sit right with me, and I know I am in the minority, but I would not enjoy winning like that.

“If the shoe was on other foot, I’d offer a replay.”

Off: Kiernan Hughes-Mason misses two games after his sending off on Saturday

Hughes-Mason is available for this weekend’s visit to Fetcham Grove of Maidstone United, but will miss Hendon and Leiston with suspension.

Brady said: “The ref wanted to make a name for himself, pure and simple.

“Kiernan got booked for talking back, fair enough, and then he puts in a tackle where it’s questionable that it’s even a foul.

“The ref blows, goes to run away, realises it’s Kiernan, who is on a yellow, and comes back to give him a second yellow.

“It was completely Sunday League stuff, with that and the linesman situation, it was just bizarre – you would not get it in the Championship, so why at Ryman level?”

He added: “In the dressing room afterwards, we just all looked at eachother, shrugged and said, we move on to Saturday.”
