Michael Spillane has promised Sutton United fans that the players will put right the wrongs of the defeat to Bath City.

United welcome Burgess Hill Town, the unbeaten leaders of Ryman Division One South, to the Lane on Saturday in the third qualifying round of the FA Cup.

They will need to put in a much better performance than fans witnessed in the 3-1 defeat to Bath last weekend.

Dale Binns had given United the lead, but a sloppy second half included a straight red card for Spillane and a subsequent penalty - a decision the club is appealing - that triggered a Bath fightback.

And Spillane, playing at centre half, was quick to acknowledge the lacklustre performance.

He said: “We were comfortable against Bath until the penalty, although we did start the second half sloppily and we were not as comfortable as in the first half.

“The penalty was a game-changer, if not for that we would have seen the game out and won. However, we should have been able to hold out for the draw, unfortunately we didn’t.”

He added: “We spoke a lot after the game about coming together and putting it right this weekend in the FA Cup.

“The cup is vitally important for any team at our level. It’ll be a tough game but we’ll be sure to put things right.”

Boss Paul Doswell said: “I was very impressed with Burgess Hill when we watched them last week, and I’ve told the players that they will need to produce that first half performance again because they will be a real threat.”
