Charlton and Crystal Palace fans have been shocked to discover the sad news their former striker David Whyte died yesterday at the age of just 43.

The forward followed in the footsteps of Ian Wright by landing a dream move to Selhurst Park from non-league Greenwich Borough in 1989.

He went on to make 27 appearances for the Eagles before moving across south-east London to The Valley in 1994.

Whyte was already a familiar face to Charlton followers having represented the Addicks eight times during a loan spell in 1992 while the club were still temporarily in exile at Upton Park awaiting their historic return to SE7.

In total he scored 35 times in 106 appearances during his two spells at Charlton, with 21 of those coming in the 1994-95 campaign.

Alan Curbishley called time on Whyte’s Valley career in 1997 and he went on to represent Ipswich, Bristol Rovers and Southend United.

A Charlton spokesman said: "The thoughts of everyone at the club are with David’s family and friends at this difficult time."

Today’s news of Whyte’s passing at such a young age has produced plenty of tributes from Addicks and Eagles followers on Twitter.
