Brentford boss Dean Smith pointed an accusing finger at Ipswich Town’s Luke Hyam after his tackle left Alan Judge with a broken leg.

Bees beat the Tractor Boys 3-1 in Suffolk, but the victory was marred in the opening minutes when Hyam’s tackle ended Judge’s season.

Judge is also unlikely to play any part in Euro 2016 with the Republic of Ireland.

Hyam was booked for the challenge, and he was later sent off for retaliation.

The Ipswich midfielder told the club website he was “distraught” over the incident, while Judge went to Twitter from his hospital bed that “This is football, things like this happen”.

However, after the Bees confirmed a lower-leg fracture, Smith was less forgiving.

“I hope it was the shin-pad and not the bone I heard,” he said.

“It was a bit of a naughty tackle, and it deserved a red card.

“Yes, the ball was there to be won, but he [Hyam] just knew that he was going to go in and do Alan at the same time. It was very reckless.”

He added: “The lads reacted very well after the incident with Alan. They never got involved with anything and were disciplined.

“The tackle on Ryan Woods later was a bit naughty too and deserving of a red card.”

Hyam said: "I'd like to contact him in a day or so and give him my best and say how sorry I am.

"I feel distraught over it. It was distressing to see and definitely affected me. My head had gone."

He added: "I know the Brentford lads were getting into me but I should never have reacted the way I did to get sent off.

"I've been out injured for a year myself and the last thing I want to see is a fellow pro getting injured like that."
