Returning stars a boost for Burley

By Nick Gentry »

If it's not one thing it’s the other with Palace but it will come.

After weeks of not being able to find the net we suddenly see a glut of goals for the Eagles only for the defence to spring more leaks than the Titanic.

The result was disappointing on Saturday and to score three goals away from home yet lose should be made a criminal offence but no one can deny the game was exciting.

There’s also a crumb in that the team has proven against the very best teams they can defend and just recently the goals have begun to flow.

The only problem being, of course, that they’re yet to combine the two.

But it will come together in the end possibly sooner rather than later with the calibre of players that are still yet to return from injury.

David Wright has only recovered enough fitness to take his place on the bench, Darren Ambrose could figure this weekend, Sean Scannell in a couple of weeks while Neil Danns will be out for a bit longer than that.

Wright has become a forgotten man since his summer arrival at Selhurst Park but his return could be the key to shoring up the back four.

Wright is vastly experienced as a left-back, a right-back and as a central defender in this division and that’s something that counts for a lot in the Championship.

Scannell has always had the potential to develop into a striker of great quality, but a combination of injuries, playing on the wing and Warnock’s tactics have hindered his development.

But given a run of games up front and Scannell could yet show why there was such a lot of Premier League interest in him a couple of seasons ago.

This is his last chance, though, to prove he has the ability to back up his reputation.

The biggest miss this season though has undoubtedly been Darren Ambrose.

His absence has had a massive effect on the team.

With Ambrose in the team there is always the potential for a moment of magic and he’s a constant threat to the opposition.

Added to this is his sublime delivery and cool head in front of goal.

With this in mind it is unfair for George Burley’s position to be called into question until he’s had a prolonged period of time being able to pick a settled side with his best players at his disposal.
