Walton Athletics Club’s field athletes were in medal winning form again at the Surrey Schools Championships at Kingsmeadow on Saturday, writes Stuart Amos.

Carla Letheby, 18, added the U20s women’s schools 1kg discus title to the county championship crown she claimed last month, with a throw of 37.94m.

While fellow 18-year-old Lisa O’Brien took the triple jump gold with a leap of 10.87m, to go one better than the silver she won at the county event.

Sophie Mace, 13, threw a personal best 39.80m to win U15 discus gold, while hammer thrower Sinead O’Brien, 18, won her event with a throw of 34.23m.

Matthew Szepietowski won U17 javelin gold, while 16-year-old Curtis Knight won U17 discus gold.

Walton athletes of all ages claimed 28 medals at the Surrey County Championships at the same venue in May.

Kingston’s Michelangelo Buter fell short of a Surrey athletics double at the Surrey County Schools Championships on Saturday.

The 13-year-old Windsor, Slough, Eton and Hounslow athlete, who won the 4kg U15 shot event at last month’s county championships, finished third at Kingsmeadow with a throw of 12.96 metres – a new personal best.

Kingston AC & Polytechnic Harriers’ county U17 wo- men’s hammer champion added the schools’ crown to her collection, with clubmate Joanna Lennon in third.

Kingston’s Gaby Orlich threw a season’s best 24.00m in the women’s U17 discus to claim a bronze medal.
