Jordan Dalrymple wants to go out of the junior volleyball ranks with a bang this year, writes Samuel Wakefield.

The 18-year-old England U19 international from Tooting, right, got a boost last week when he was given a £1,000 cash windfall for the third year running by the Lloyds TSB Local Heroes initiative.

And the Ernest Bevin College pupil is keen for the money and expert tuition he will receive to help him make his mark before moving up to senior level competition.

“This is my final year as a junior so I really want to impress,” he said after being treated to a behind-the-scenes tour of the Olympic Park as part of the initiative’s launch.

“We have a tournament in Italy coming up with the England U19s and there are a few training camps this summer.

“But I am applying to go to university at the moment as well so it’s a busy season for me and I am looking forward to it.”

While Dalyrmple has his eyes on competing for Great Britain at the 2016 Olympics, he also has a part to play in this summer’s Games having been picked by Lloyds TSB to be one of their torchbearers in the run up to the opening ceremony.

Dalrymple, who plays for London Lynx, will carry the Olympic torch as it passes through Wandsworth on July 23 and he cannot wait.

“I am just so excited about it, as are my family and friends,” he added.

“I am really looking forward to it because it will be such a great experience.

“I just want to get involved in any way that I can and sample London 2012 because we probably won’t get a chance like this ever again.”
