Hercules Wimbledon’s women’s cross country runners achieved their best ever end-of-season team placing in the Surrey Ladies League on Saturday, while the men’s team retained their Division One status in the Surrey Men’s League.
The women were in action in their final meeting at Esher and came 11th on the day to finish third overall in Division One, while the men finished in third in their meeting at Wimbledon Common to claim fifth in the table.
With Hercules’ Ruth Clifton coming second in 29 minutes, 50 seconds, but running for Thames Hare & Hounds, the club’s first scoring finisher was Amy Aronson in 22nd in 33:16.
“It is amazing to think we have achieved this after gaining promotion two seasons ago and finishing ninth last year,” said team manager Janet Fernando.
“What a turn round from a few seasons back when we had so few runners turning out we were thinking of disbanding the section.”
The match was won by Wimbledon Common-based Thames Hare & Hounds, who won the overall title for the second year running.
Alex Robinson and Liam White took second and third in the men’s meeting in Wimbledon as they ran 28:39 and 28:40.
Keiran White finished fifth in 38:47 to help the team to their best placing of this season.
Thames Hare & Hounds came second on the day and finished second overall.
