Herne Hill Harriers collected more than 40 medals in the two-day Surrey Track and Field Championships at Kingsmeadow last weekend.

Harriers’ British League athlete Peter Phillips retained his senior 400m title in 49:37.

That was just two-hundredths of a second quicker than Toby Adeyemi (49:39) with 400m debutant Nick Atwell third (49:41).

Phillips said: “I felt good coming around the last bend before entering the home straight but I knew I had a lot of work to do to get ahead of Toby and Nick, who I train with regularly and know are strong finishers.”

“I could sense this would go down to the wire and I needed to keep pushing to stay in the mix.

“I am glad it paid off and I’m pleased to record a good time at this point of the season and hope it is the sign of things to come.”

Harriers’ international athlete, Katie Snowden recorded a thrilling win over perennial rival at national level, Georgia Peel, in the U20 women’s 800m and also took second place in Sunday’s 400m.

Breagha Campbell set a new club record in winning the U13 girls’ 1,500m in five minutes, 6.69 seconds.

She followed that with bronze medals in the following day’s 800m and long jump.

One of the most exciting contests brought a 1-2-3 finish for Herne Hill in the senior men’s 400m.

Robert Graham won a competitive men’s 100m race with Idris Ojuriye snatching bronze after dropping out of the 200m final with cramp the day before.

Harriers enjoyed another 1-2-3 in the U15 boys’ 100m courtesy of Zanson Plummer, Frederick Afrifa and Jermaine Graham.

Afrifa took gold ahead of Plumber in the 200m.

Vanessa La Fon won the U17 women’s 100m, Charlotte Kanini-Parsons the U20 women’s javelin, Brandon Wallace the U13 boys’ 100m, Faysel Nadew the U13 boys’ 800m, Tshon Carnegie the U17 men’s 100m and Tayo Andrews the U17 men’s high jump.

Paul Oluyemi (7.52m) won the senior men’s long jump at the Dorset Championships.

Harriers won their opening Rosenheim League fixture in Battersea Park last Thursday.

Other team successes in the past week have come in their Southern Men’s League Division Two match, a National Young Athletes’ League fixture and a Southern Veterans’ League clash.
