Wimbledon can plan for the play-offs after beating United

Cambridge United 1-2 AFC Wimbledon

Wimbledon near enough sealed their play-off place with four games to go after an excellent performance in sunny Cambridge this afternoon.

It wasn't so long ago the Dons faithful were questioning whether their side would even qualify for the end of season competition.

Out of form and out of luck, the players have responded and this three points means Terry Brown's team have won three on the spin – and they're now in better form than anyone else in the play-off pack.

Defender Brett Johnson has been the catalyst behind the upturn in fortunes.

He now has three goals in his last four matches, and he set the promotion-seekers on their way with a goal from close range after 11 minutes.

It was 2-0 when recent signing Kaid Mohammed put away Luke Moore's pass just over half an hour into the game to double the Dons lead.

Danny Wright gave Cambridge hope in the closing stages of the match when he finally got the better of Seb Brown but a point for the hosts would have been unjust.

Terry Brown was delighted to have already sealed his team's top five finish.

He said: “To pretty much get in the play-offs already is a wonderful achievement. We have turned our poor form into good form and we're playing excellent crisp football again.

“We’re still not mathematically there, but we’ve got Histon next week and some games we ought to win, so while I’m not being blasé about it, we’re planning for the play-offs now.

“This is not an easy place to come and win. Cambridge United are a huge club with good players but I thought we were professional today. We looked good going forward and I am happy with the players, especially the way we managed to close the game out.”

The Dons head to already relegated Histon on Saturday and then have home games against Mansfield and Grimsby either side of a visit to Forest Green Rovers.

Cambridge are again in trouble and their manager Jez George said: “Full credit to AFC Wimbledon. They’re the best team I’ve seen this season and they taught us a lesson.”
