Williams wins war of attrition

Danny Williams came through a titanic but exciting encounter and recorded a seventh-round stoppage success over Kazakhstan's Konstantin Airich last Friday evening at País Vasco, near Bilboa, Spain, writes Ziad Chaudry.

The 34-year-old Brixton Bomber worked his way from a losing position. He came from three knockdowns and two points deductions to pull off a remarkable victory.

Williams finally got into full gear by twice decking the Kazakhstani in round five and six, before a one-way battering in the seventh saw Airich's promoter Ahmet Öner throwing in the towel.

"I am glad I won the fight," said Williams, who knelt down and kissed the ring mat after his victory.

"It was a real war. I had heard before that Konstantin is a hard puncher but I was really shocked when he hit me in the first couple of rounds. This boy has fists of stone.

"I think the referee did a bad job and I didn't want that to be decisive in the fight. So, in the end, I did what I had to do to finish him off."

Williams will in action again on July 4, when he defends his British title against Horden's John McDermott at Goresbrook Leisure Centre, Dagenham.
