Crystal Palace midfielder James McArthur is keen to get back up to speed after a “frustrating” pre-season.

The 29-year-old scored both of the Eagles’ goals in their 2-1 Carabao Cup win against Ipswich Town on Tuesday and played the entire game for the first time this season.

He said he felt strong in the first week of pre-season, but a hamstring injury affected his game-time.

Asked whether he is concerned he has not reached his peak yet, McArthur said: “Definitely, that is why I am trying to work so hard in training.

“I went through a little hard time with getting injuries, then coming back and pulling up again.

“It’s about trying to stay injury-free, keep working on my fitness, keep working on my match sharpness and trying to make it hard for the manager to not pick me.”

Ruben Loftus-Cheek has joined on a season-long loan from Chelsea, increasing competition in midfield, but McArthur remains determined.

He added: “It obviously makes it harder but you need to make it hard for the manager not to pick you. Whatever happens, I will keep working hard for this club and keep trying to get in the team to help.”

The Scotland international also spoke about his thoughts on boss Frank de Boer and his influence so far.

“He is a good, good manager who has a high pedigree of being a top, top player,” McArthur said.

“Everyone respects him and he has got very good ideas about the game. It is very important, our home form has not been as good.

“He is a manager who will change things when he needs to and will have different solutions to different problems. Hopefully that will help us, especially at home.”

And is he ready to start on Saturday against Swansea City?

“I am just working on my fitness. If the manager chooses me, then I will give my all.

“I need to play and I need to get my minutes in to try and be ready. It is up to the gaffer who he picks but I will be ready to do whatever is necessary.”
