Sutton United reserve goalkeeper Wayne Shaw has resigned after being asked by the club to do so.
Mr Shaw has been embroiled in a betting scandal after he was filmed eating a pie during Sutton's FA Cup tie with Arsenal on Monday.
A statement on the club's website said: "Wayne Shaw has resigned from his role at Sutton United following the events of last evening and subsequent publicity. He has said that he fully understands the club's position regarding this matter.
"We are naturally disappointed that Wayne's time with us should end in this manner, and would like to thank him for his contribution to the club and wish him well for the future."
It is not the first time Mr Shaw has left the club for events off the pitch.
He may not be unemployed for long after Morrisons offered the back-up keeper a one-year deal to join their pie tasting team.
The supermarket would also give Mr Shaw a year’s worth of pies as part of the deal.
What does the FA say:
According to FA rules players, managers, match officials and other staff members employed by a club cannot bet on a match or competition they are involved in, or can influence that season.
Since the 2014/15 season the rules were changed to include betting on any ‘football-related matter’, which includes transfers, team selections, manager employment and other events associated with the game.
It also rules that “participants are also prohibited from using or passing inside information for betting”.
The decision has already divided opinion on Twitter.
This Wayne Shaw sacking just about sums up the pathetically PC-crazed world we now have to endure. Shame on you, Sutton United.

The Wayne Shaw thing is a sad, yes, but he was also stupid. I have sympathy, certainly, but the modern game is legislated to the nines.
