So an interesting week for Sutton United with two very different tests for the side, and the new season drawing ever nearer.

As Paul Doswell said in his interview after the game against Crystal Palace U21s the Wednesday night fixture at Kingstonian was more for the purposes of fitness and tactical experiment, hence the rather poor performance.

It is true that several players put in individual performances that were a long way under the level expected of them, but after exhausting pre-season fitness training this is not too much of a surprise – indeed it is better to get these poor performances out of the way before the actual competitive football starts.

While I was not at the weekend fixture against the Eagles, I heard good things about the performance from those who did watch the game.

Thanks to SUFCtv’s coverage I saw the Gomis goal on Saturday evening – and what a goal it was.

It’s reassuring to know you have midfielders who can come up with the goods on a day when it just isn’t happening for the strikers.

I feel an extra striker in the squad would be very useful to give us more options up top, but when Craig McAllister returns to full fitness it could almost have the effect of a new signing.

Trialist Jack Doherty looked to be a talented player in his 30 minute appearance on Wednesday night and would provide something different to the attack.

With a fit McAllister, Dan Fitchett, Craig Dundas and Doherty there would be something of everything for Doswell to call upon in the season coming.
