The new England Korfball League season gets under way this weekend, with Croydon-based Trojans looking to defend their title.

Trojans had four players representing England at the recent World Championships - Steph Allen, Sam Brooks, Kathryn Goodridge and Amy Turner.

Coached by Gary Brooks, they have reinforced their squad over the summer with the arrival of Jonny Nickerson from Tooting outfit Bec, and Ana Rocha from Highbury.

Bec finished second last season and are coached by Dave Buckland.

Claire Dique, Caitlin Fitzgerald, Ben King, Blake Palfreyman and Davesh Patel from the Bec squad all represented England at the World Championships, and Palfreyman was the nation's top scorer with 29.

Bec have signed Helen West from Cambridge Tigers over the summer.

Epsom-based Nomads, coached by Peter Teague, finished sixth last season, just above the relegation play-off places.

Another member of England's World Championships squad, Hannah Lorrimer, has joined Nomads this summer from Nottingham.

In addition, Alex Bell has rejoined Nomads after a spell at Southampton Spartans and Emma Thornberg has also joined from Kent side Kingfishers.

League new-boys Croydon won promotion back to the England Korfball League last season after a one-year absence.

Coached by Colin Boys, Croydon have added Andy Bovey from Birmingham City to their squad.

In the opening matches on Sunday, three of the London clubs take on sides from Kent.

Bec travel to Kingfishers, Nomads travel to Tornadoes while Croydon are at home to KV.

Meanwhile, Trojans have an away fixture at Norwich Knights.
