Malden Wanderers James Wackett reckons Saturday’s six-wicket win at Chipstead, Coulsdon and Walcountians has his men primed for a crack at Surrey Championship Division One leaders Ashtead on Saturday, writes Steve Morgan.

Surrey prospect 16-year-old Rafeh Jafri was the star as his 7-39 – including a five-wicket burst in six post-lunch overs – skittled the hosts for 115 in 43.2 overs, with good support from the parsimonious Giles Puckle.

In reply, Pete Young and in-form Cil van der Merwe held their nerve against some spirited bowling, to ease Malden home inside 26 overs with just four wickets down.

Wanderers were thrashed by nine-wickets – after a first innings knock of just 78 – the last time they faced Ashtead, but back-to-back victories have hoisted the Stags to fourth in the table.

And skipper Wackett is feeling confident.

“It will be a measure of how much we have improved during the season,” he said.

“They thrashed us earlier on, but we go into the game with confidence sky high.”

Malden's second string slid to a 78-run Premier League defeat against Wimbledon at Cambridge Avenue.

The visitors rallied from 68 for 6 to post 213 in 52.5 overs, Khayyam Shakeel taking 5-82 for the Stags and Daniel Urquhart top scoring with 51.

Malden collapsed to 32 for 5, and though Keyes (48) added 86 for the sixth wicket with Andrew Martin (37), the latter’s dismissal sparked a collapse in which 5 wickets fell for 13 - Hiram Marambe taking 3-1 - as the Stags folded for 131.
