Wimbledon hockey club player-coach Ben Marsden took positives from his side’s 3-3 draw with league leaders Surbiton despite throwing away a 3-1 lead.

The solitary point keeps Dons fourth in the MHL Premier Division, four points off the top.

Wimbledon led early on through Blake Govers, Steven Ebbers and Ali Brogdon but were pegged back in the second half.

Marsden said: “We should have won, but equally we could have lost.

“Surbiton are a good side and it was a fantastic game played to a high standard. We put on a great spectacle.”

Dons now travel to fellow play-off hopefuls Beeston on Saturday.

Marsden said: “I’m looking forward to what should be a good game. I’m confident we can get a good result if we perform as well as we can.”

Marsden’s confidence will be boosted by the early form of new signing Govers.

The Aussie has settled in well since joining in December, scoring in back-to-back games for the club.

Marsden said: “He’s adapted to life at the club really well and he keeps scoring. He’s a popular figure and he really thrown himself in to every aspect of the club.”

The Wimbledon ladies recorded a second consecutive win in the WHL Conference East.

Goals from Olivia Martineau and Karlijn van der Linden saw the ladies, who host Horsham this weekend, past Bedford 2-1 and climb to fifth in the table.
