AFC Wmbledon fans are a step closer to discovering the plans for a new stadium at Plough Lane as the club announced today that it has submitted an application to Merton Council.

The club said it is closer to returning to its spiritual home in Merton after submitting plans for a ‘community stadium’ with 11,000 seats in Wimbledon.

But the Wimbledon greyhound stadium site is also the subject of a rival bid from the greyhound industry.

Oct 21: Millionaire businessman reveals shock new greyhound plans for Wimbledon Stadium

Wimbledon Times:

Plans for a new £100m greyhound stadium were revealed recently by businessman Paschal Taggart but he said he will not formally submit his plans to the council.

AFC Wimbledon said today its detailed plans will not be made public until the council has completed its verification process, checking that the application complies with the requirements for an application of this nature and complexity.

It could take a few weeks for the process to be completed, at which point the plans will be made available for public scrutiny, it said.

The application seeks permission for 600 homes with ‘retail and commercial space and a leisure club’ and an 11,000 seater stadium.

A poll from Oct 21 allowed our readers to have their say

They would apply for permission to extend the capacity to 20,000, to ‘cater for growing support as promotion up the Football League is earned."

Chief executive Erik Samuelson said: "This is the culmination of 18 months intensive work for the club, Galliard Homes, and our team of specialist advisers.

"It is an extremely comprehensive proposal covering every aspect of the development and associated issues. We ask everyone to be patient for a little longer before the details can be shared in a few weeks’ time."

He added: "We’ve been hugely encouraged by the fantastic levels of support our plans have attracted, and on behalf of AFC Wimbledon and Galliard Homes, I thank everyone who took part in the consultation."
