Rosslyn Park grabbed another way win after a tight affair at Cinderford ended 19-17 in their favour.

It is never an easy feat at Cinderford, who tackled and harried like demons, but had Park's execution matched their ambition. they might have had the National League One match wrapped up by half time.

The home side made a lively start, winning a penalty to put them into the visitors’ 22, but Park defended well.

A penalty soon went the other way, met with equally stern defence.

Park looked to play an expansive game, but Cinderford’s in-your-face defence was determined not to allow it and to harry the visitors into errors.

The deadlock was broken on 15 minutes when the powerful Park pack destroyed their opponents at a scrum and some quick inter-passing saw them into the 22, from where fly half Tom Whelan received a pass, saw a gap, and ran through to score by the posts, converting his own effort for 7-0.

Three minutes later Park conceded a penalty on half way and home fly half Davies, with a strong diagonal breeze at his back, made no mistake for 7-3.

Park were looking sharp, and a super run by Kiba Richards saw Park cross the line, but his scoring pass was forward.

Winger Dave Vincent made an incisive run but, with the line apparently at his mercy, failed to back himself, and instead gave a pass outside that went to ground.

Park retained the ball and worked it inside, where Mark Ireland looked to have scored but he was stopped for ‘crossing’. Cinderford tried to clear, but Park were soon back into the 22 via a run from Dante Mama.

All their good work came to nothing when the ball splilled to the ground and was hacked on from inside his own 22 by home full-back Wilcox. He was quickest to the ball and hacked on again, a feat he repeated twice more until it was over the visitors’ try line and he dived on it for a superb individual try on 25 minutes to give his side an 8-7 lead.

Park had the lion’s share of the attacking but errors combined with some committed defending saw it come to nothing.

The best chance was a great run up the left by Hugo Ellis, who passed inside for scrum half Jack Gash to dive over, but the Park skipper had put a foot in touch before releasing the pass.

A shaky start to the second half saw Park conceded two penalties in the first three minutes, both gratefully accepted by Davies to give Cinderford a 14-7 lead.

Park came back at them and a penalty on 48 minutes steadied the ship, Whelan slotting it over for 14-10.

The visitors again dominated, but could not retain the ball and a promising move up the wing saw the final pass missed.

It was the pack who won the next score, forcing Cinderford to concede a penalty at the scrum for Whelan to narrow the scores to 14-13 with less than 20 minutes remaining.

Watch out: Rosslyn Park's Dante Mama on the attack

Park surged back to the edge of the 22 and, when penalised, Cinderford kicked the ball away to concede 10 metres to give Whelan an easy kick for 16-14 on 65 minutes.

Another promising Park move came to nought when the ball was dropped in the tackle, and when they conceded a penalty with less than five minutes remaining, well converted by Davies for 17-16, things looked really bleak for Park.

However, they kept their heads and set up a massive attack - Joe Ajuwa defied several tackles and nearly scored, but the move was stopped by a high tackle and Whelan stepped up to nail the penalty for 19-17 to Park in time added for stoppages.

But there was still another twist when, playing down the clock in the last play of the match Park conceded a penalty close to half way.

Davies was asked to kick his side to an unlikely win, but despite his 100 per cent record so far it was a tall order against the wind.

With Fylde drawing, the win takes Park into second place in the table, three points behind the unbeaten leaders, Ealing.
