Adebayo Akinfenwa could easily be mistaken for a London bus, but he does not mind because the bus has brought finally brought goals for the AFC Wimbledon striker.

After eight games without finding the back of the net, the 32-year-old has three goals to his name – including last weekend’s winner over Morecambe at the Cherry Red Records stadium.

While acknowledging a sense of relief at finally breaking his duck, Akinfenwa takes satisfaction from his role in the goals scored by striking partner Matt Tubbs.

Moreover, his concerns lay with the team performance rather than ticks in his goals column.

He said: “As experienced as I am, I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t playing on my mind, and it was a relief when the header went in against Burton.

“It doesn’t matter how professional you want to be, how often someone tells you it is just a matter of time – when you start a new season or at a new club, you want to get that first goal.

“Eight games is the longest I’ve gone at the start of a new season without scoring, at least I think that’s right – it has certainly felt like the longest.”

He added: “It was a relief, but at the same time I was happy with my performances.

“If I was not playing well, it would have been more of a weight on my shoulders. But at the same time, strikers are judged on goals, so it was a beautiful thing to get my goals and at home where we’ve struggled, and against a team that had been blowing everyone away.

“And then, like London buses, the goals come and you relax. More experienced players will tell that when they come, they come, so long may it continue against Morecambe.

“But I will always go for team win rather than personal glory – the better the team does, the better you do.”

Dons have already recorded back –to-back wins this season, but then went on a five-match winless streak, such is the inconsistency in performance.

However, should the Dons come away from Newport County this weekend, Akinfenwa will not be hiding.

“We’re such a new squad, it takes time to bed in. The manner of our wins recently hopefully shows where we’ve got the formula right.

“On our day we can beat anyone – we’ve shown that by beating the top two – and the gaffer’s implementing a mentality and an ethos of sticking together.”

He added: “It is all about consistency, the team that goes on the best run generally gets the best outcome at the end of the season.

“We’re hoping that we’ve turned that corner, but if we don’t get the result against Newport County, we won’t bury our heads in the sand.

“We’ll go back and keep working until we get it right and go on a run of seven, eight games unbeaten – we’ve got the team and squad to do that.”
