Director of rugby Conor O'Shea has told new Harlequins captain Joe Marler he has no issues with his discipline.

The 24-year-old prop picked up a second half yellow card for a dangerous tackle in Saturday's 20-15 triumph over London Irish.

His transgression would reduce his side to 13 men when fellow front row Kyle Sinckler headed to the sin bin for a similar offence.

It was Marler's first game at the helm since taking over from England captain Chris Robshaw, but O'Shea reckoned there was no need to curb his enthusiasm.

"That sort of thing can always happen in a double tackle situation like that. It was not a loss of control," said O'Shea.

"Other people can make of it what they will, but I have no problem with Joe. It was one of those things.

"Joe is going to be an absolutely fantastic captain for this club and a great leader on the pitch.

"Kyle reacted to being grabbed around the throat coming out of a scrum. He came out of the line looking to make a point and hit a tackle hard. He must learn not to react.

"Chris [Robshaw] stepped into Joe's shoes for a few minutes when he went off, so he is not a bad man to have covering you."
