All-rounder Will Sabey and Malden Wanderers may have hit form at just the right time.

The 28-year-old will line-up against former club Camberley in  Surrey Championship Division One today with last week's figures of 6-24 and a first league hat-trick in his back pocket.

His heroics took captain Giles Puckle’s men to a remarkable 55-run victory over Esher last Saturday, having seemed set for defeat after being dismissed for a  meagre 103 all out.

An inspired Sabey, who exchanged Camberley for Cambridge Avenue at the beginning of last season, reduced the visitors to 49 all out in reply to give Wanderers second win in as many matches and move them up to fourth in the table after a slow start to the campaign.

As an accountant, Sabey, right, looks at figures all day and his weekend numbers seemed a good return in anyone’s book

And he’ll be hoping for more seam friendly wickets when he returns to his old stomping ground tomorrow.

“The wickets have been so wet and it was very difficult for batsmen to play their shots at the weekend,” said Sabey, who has 11 victims from three games having taken four wickets against Cranleigh a fortnight earlier.

“I was just bowling medium paced off-cutters and hopefully getting it to move a bit.

“The hat-trick ball was a case of bowling  straight and hoping everything goes well.

“Luckily the batsman caved in under the pressure and he missed it.

“They are my best figures for a long time and I certainly cannot remember getting any better in a league match.

“I only took 16 league wickets last year and I am already more than half way to beating that.”

He added: “Pete Young and I came here two years ago from Camberley, so we both still know a lot of faces down there.

“Things are going well with the ball, it is just the batting that is the problem.”

Lower order batsmen Thushara Managei and Thomas Winslade set up Weybridge for their first Surrey Championship Premier Division win of the season last week.

Managei (58), who also chipped in with a key wicket with the ball, and Winslade (41) combined to edge skipper Joel Pope’s men to 223-8 off 50 overs at Guildford , having been 72-4 at one stage.

Opening bowler Barry Hooper claimed season’s best league figures of 4-53 to help dismiss the hosts for 203.

It was the first time the two teams have clashed since Guildford scuppered Weybridge’s title hopes on the final day of the campaign last year.

A George Cairns century and five wickets from Gayan Sirisoma ensured East Molesey – eight points off the summit – kept up with the early season pace setters in Division One.

Cairns hit 125 as the Moles reached 308-3 off 50 overs at Cheam’s Peaches Close home, before Sirisoma (5-35) helped  dismiss the hosts for 204.

Walton-on-Thames will hope their win at table-topping Purley can spark a Division Two promotion push this term.

Chris Madoc-Jones was the hero as his four wickets – including Purley openers Harry Hanford (57) and Tauseef Mehdi (36) – helped dismiss the hosts for 170, with the assistance of evergreen Paul Bainbridge (3-29).

Madoc-Jones (0) was the first wicket to fall for his side with the score on five, but 61 from Bainbridge and 42 from Sam Gorvin saw them home with four wickets and seven overs to spare.
