Fish perish in Wandle

The mystery pollution that killed hundreds of fish in the River Wandle in Beddington appears to have struck again - with reports of dying fish, discoloured water and a strong bleach-like smell.
A passerby near London Road, Mitcham, reported seeing the effects of the pollution at about 2.30pm today.
| The water was discoloured and I could see eels and fish coming to the surface dying. People were saying it smelled like chlorine or bleach.” | |
|
A mystery pollution struck in the same spot on August 8, leading customers from the Queen's Head pub in Mill Green Road to rescue the larger fish from the river and take them to bathtubs in nearby houses.
The pollution soon washed away and the Environment Agency promised to investigate.
The passerby said: "It's happened again. I noticed a strong smell and looked down at the river. The water was discoloured and I could see eels and fish coming to the surface dying. People were saying it smelled like chlorine or bleach."

I live near to Ravensbury Park - there is a strong smell in the park and around the river and fish of all sizes are struggling or already dead. The normally clear water is murky and quite dark in places

The National Trust wardens told everyone to keep away from the river today - they say there has been a leak of amonia into the river from Willow Lane Industrial Estate. The police are investigating - let's hope ther's a big fine, because the river is full of dead fish.

[bold]bold[/bold] [bold]bold[/bold] I used to live in London and been following the Wandle info over the years. It seems it takes years and years and mega amounts of money have been spent to clean it up and stock fish, yet it only takes minutes to wipe it out by some fools, possibly to save money in proper disposal or containment.
The culprits should be put out of business and imprisoned if found to be negligent in this case.[bold]bold[/bold]

This is nothing short of environmental genocide.
Those responsible should be put out of business, fined beyond belief, and then locked up for their sins.
Until people and corporations are substantially penalised for these kind of acts they will unfortunately keep happening. I sincerely hope those responsible have the book thrown at them.

I can only second the earlier comments. The Wandle is a amazing urban river with an abundance of wildlife. Lots of effort has been put into its conservation and this is a massive body blow. Name, shame and prosecute.

I live near the River Wandle and am an angler, much of the wandle stocks have been killed off and i am not happy. I want whoever is responsible for this to be named and shamed, fish are a major part of the eco system and help clean our water this allows all types of insects to bread and live around rivers which in turn provides food for other animals Birds will also be effected Heron,Kingfisher, i have also seen a few dead river voles. This whole cycle of abuse has to stop! and if that means setting the culprits as an example by closing their business down then so be it?

when i got the call from my brother about the spillage my heart sunk not again i have lived around the sutton area all my life and fished the wandle on numereous ocassions it was becoming a good little fishery and because of some idiots incompetance the river will have to start from scratch i hope the fine handed out reflects what they have done to the local community not only anglers but other people who use the footpaths alongside the river i bet it wasnt a pretty site or smell i cant say how dissapointed i am and i think this is echoed throughout the community

I agree that this is a tragedy, having been involved with a number of the bodies involved in improving the Wandle and raising it's profile over a number of years. I would agree that fines should be levied and these should be large but would ask that these are applied to reinstating and improving the river through organisations such as the Wandle Trust and the establishment of the long talked about Wandle Valley Park.

Possibly 20 years of improvement desimated in one day of incompetence--the wildlife the very food the fish feed on being wiped out -this really is a dreadful situation and i know having seen the way the river has improved over the time i have lived nearby since 1962 saddens me and that a publicly quoted company will undoubtdly be let off with a pitiful and soft fine which will cause no significant dent to their substantial balanace sheet-i would love to get a consortium of people togethr to sue the pants off the comapny to maximise any fine or compensation to go into a fund to really clean out all the old debris and rubbish still very abundant in streches of the river--I think it needs one of these organisastions to be taken to task through the courts and fined accordingly before any real controls on these riverside polluters cease-to me a fine of no less than £10m should be about right and the bulk of that be used in creating longterm objectives on removing of all foul/or otherwise water entry points into the river system and to pay for an intensive and wholesale clean up of the whole of the river--paul jenkins
