GREENWICH athlete Zoe Smith has been selected to compete in the Olympics as the youngest member of Team GB’s weightlifters.

The eighteen-year-old was picked today for the five-strong team and will compete in the Women’s 58kg category from July 28 to August 7.

Greenwich-born Zoe Smith said: “I’m elated to have been selected for the team. It has been a nerve-wracking period ahead of selection, so I’m glad that I’ve now secured my place and can definitely say I’ll be representing Team GB at the Games!”

The former De Lucy Primary School pupil was originally a gymnast and switched to weightlifting aged 13. She went on to score bronze at the 2010 Commonwealth at just 16 years old.

Greenwich Council has supported the star through charity Starting Blocks which recognises young sporting talent.

Leader of the council Cllr Chris Roberts said: “Zoe Smith is a prime example of how supporting these young people now, can mean we can all share in their successes in 2012 and beyond.”
