AN ATHLETE from Bexley Village is hoping to represent Great Britain at the Special Olympics later this year.

Twenty-four-year-old Conrad Davis - who has a learning disability, epilepsy and ADHD - will find out at the end of June if he will compete for his country in athletics and gymnastics at the games, which will take place at the same time as the Paralympic Games in August and September.

Conrad, who is helped by Bexley Council, the National Lottery and support provider Dimensions, has previously won gold and silver medals in both disciplines at national and regional level.

He joined Bexley Athletics Club after his talent was spotted by a coach at an inter-school sports day when he was ten.

Aged 15, he was identified as talented by England Athletics’ coach for people with learning disabilities and at his first appearance for England won 100m and 200m titles.

His participation this summer depends on his performance at the Mencap Sport National Athletics Championships in Manchester on June 30.

His dad, Yorkland Davis, 65, said: “We are extremely proud of Conrad, both as a son and a person.

“We are very honoured by his sporting prowess and achievements and if he were to be selected for the Special Olympics it is hoped that such attainment would serve as an example for other people with a disability to work industriously, diligently and with a clear goal of maximising their abilities in personal achievements – whatever these may be.”
