Schools in Epsom and Ewell hosted their own Olympic torch relay on Monday.

Hundreds of pupils, aged five to 18, from schools including St Martin’s Infants, Rosebery, Epsom Primary, St Clements, Wallace Fields, Glyn, Lindon Bridge and West Ewell Infants, took part in the event.

Joan Swan, deputy head of St Martin's Infants, said: "The torch relay was a wonderful way for our pupils to feel personally involved with the Olympics.

"One child from each class was chosen to hold the torch and it was a great start to our school's sports day".

The relay marked the start of a summer of sport in the schools to coincide with the London 2012 Olympics.

From July 1 to July 13, pupils will be encouraged to participate in a range of activities as part of the Epsom and Ewell Olympic Games, which will see local schools, sports centres and outdoor venues hosting their own events.
