- In 2012, London will become the first city to host the Olympics three times.
- Over 50% of the Olympic Cycling Road Race event is within the Surrey borders.
- The father of Merton rowing hopeful Sophie Hosking was a World Champion rower in the lightweight eight in 1980.
- Croydon resident Dorothy Tyler won a silver medal in the high jump at the 1948 games.
- Wimbledon also hosted the tennis competition at the 1908 games.
- Sutton and Cheam Swimming Club member Pat Kendall swam the freestyle in the 1948 games.
