A man has been killed after being crushed by a crane-mounted lorry outside Wimbledon's Court One.

The man, believed to be in his 60s and from Leicester, was killed after the vehicle overturned on top of him in Church Road around 10.15am yesterday.

It is thought the man, who has not been identified, had stepped out of the lorry to supervise a delivery being made to the All England Lawn Tennis Club.

A spokeswoman for the London Ambulance Service said two fast response cars attended but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Merton Council is investigating the death.

Lyn Carpenter, the council's director of environment and regeneration, said: "Merton Council would like to offer its sincerest condolences to the man's family following the tragic incident on Tuesday.

"The investigation of workplace accidents and fatalities falls to Merton's Environmental Health officers to investigate under the Health and Safety at Work Act.

"Two of Merton's most experienced officers were at the scene working with all three emergency services and the Vehicle Inspectorate.

"Merton Council and its environmental health officers will continue to work closely with the police to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

"The man's family has now been informed."
