An 11-year-old girl has secured a book deal with a publisher after winning a writing competition.

Eliza Jones, a student at Poplar Primary School in Merton Park, won the deal after entering a writing competition earlier this year as part of the Wimbledon BookFest 2012.

The competition, supported by publishers Harper Collins Big Cat, invited children aged nine to 11 to write a story around the theme “animal Olympics” for children aged six to seven.

Eliza’s story about a number of animals that enter an Olympic competition beat off competition from 18 other schools across Merton.

Councillor Stephen Alambritis, leader of Merton Council, said: “The story will be very popular as the Games will be fresh in everyone’s minds.”

Katharine Davies, headteacher at Poplar Primary School, said: “The whole school loved her story.”

“We have enjoyed working with HarperCollins and Wimbledon BookFest, as they both support the development of children’s literacy skills by promoting reading and writing for enjoyment.”
