Wimbledon streets were decked out in red, white and blue on Saturday and people celebrated the royal wedding in style.

From eight weeks to 80 years, Evelyn Road was packed to the brim with people excited to take in the special event.

“We had an amazing response,” Katie Meech, who was one of the organisers said.

“People volunteered to hang out bunting, sweep the streets, pull out their barbecues and bring out food and drink to share, including dishes from their culture.”

With 20 different nationalities and ethnic groups on show, another organiser, Angela Cahill, said it was a great chance for people to get to know one another.

“Some people had lived in the streets for decades without not knowing each other,” she said.

“But eating, drinking, chatting and laughing together has built a real bond.

"People who have lived on the street for 40 years said there hadn’t been a street party in all that time.

“We were surprised that it really wasn’t a lot of work.

"The council were helpful in giving us the permissions and the emergency services gave us the green light. After insurance, it was just a case of people turning up and mucking in."

But there was one person in particular that stood out from the crowd, and no, it wasn't Meghan Markle.

It turns out Olympic kayaker Anna Hemmings calls the area home.

"We all live such busy lives, and with more traffic and safety concerns kids no longer play in the streets," Ms Hemmings said.

"It was therefore a great way to get to know more about the people who live just a hundred metres away.”

It seems like the party did just the trick to get the little ones out and about.

“The kids had so much fun,"11-year-old Kamini Meech-Menon said.

“We were riding bikes, scooters and go carts up and down the street and drawing on the road with chalk.

"I really hope we can do another one soon.”
