A Wimbledon golfer has become a national champion in the sport.

Jane Britton, who is Lady Vice-Captain at Wimbledon Common Golf Club (WCGC), only took up golf three years ago.

She qualified through club and regional rounds to become the UK’s National Public Course Ladies Champion of 2017 following a hard-fought competition at the prestigious Eden Course at St Andrews in Scotland.

During wet and windy conditions Ms Britton scored an impressive 40 points to take the overall title, and now hopes her victory will inspire others.

She said: “WCGC is a small friendly club with a relatively new ladies section so hopefully this shows that we can produce some excellent results.

Wimbledon Common Golf Club is 107 years old. It's clubhouse in Camp Road overlooks Wimbledon Common.
