A ‘Community Roadwatch’ has been established in Sutton and Merton in an attempt to reduce speed in residential areas.

Residents were informed via a letter sent by Sutton and Merton Safer Transport Team Roads & Transport Policing Command.

Volunteers will be able to work alongside police as part of the role which sees them use speed detection kits to identify speeding vehicles, which are then issued with warning letters where appropriate.

Richard Johnson, who runs a community Facebook for Worcester Park, said: “I’m very well aware of many residents’ concerns relating to speeding especially near our local schools. And a deep community dissatisfaction with councillor responses.

“Both are widely deemed to have been expensive failures, being without any consequences for motorists who disregard them. Speeding motorists driving far above a speed limit are seen to take little notice of any sign, whatever the size, shape, colour or speed limit.

“Meanwhile, road humps have done far more harm than good. They do little to reduce vehicle speeds, but have resulted in 24/7 noise and vibrations for residents.”

Mr Johnson did acknowledge that a Community Roadwatch is a “hands-on response” and therefore is worth supporting.

The letter encouraged anyone interested in being involved in the Community Roadwatch to email communityroadsutton@met.police.uk
