The death of a teenage moped rider who crashed into a police car will be investigated by the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

The 16-year-old boy died in hospital on Monday after the accident in Trinity Road near the junction with South Park Road.

The moped, which had been reported as lost or stolen, was being monitored by a police helicopter at the time of the incident, as it was believed to have been involved in an earlier attempted robbery, with support from police cars.

Three teenagers were riding the moped at the time of the crash and a 16-year-old remains in hospital in a stable condition.

A 15-year-old was released from hospital yesterday and is under arrest on suspicion of taking and driving away, failure to stop, possession of an offensive weapon and attempted robbery,

All three boys were initially arrested at the scene at around 2.15am on Sunday, July 16 and two large knives were recovered.
