Merton school children went head-to-head under tutorship of the older generation this week.

Bowling grandees passed on some vital bowls skills to their tutees in preparation for the annual Merton Schools Bowling Tournament. Pupils from Benedict, Garfield, Joseph Hood and Singlegate primary schools took part.

Merton Bowling Club hosted the event and helped tutor four schools with clubs in Merton Park, Mitcham and Wimbledon Park. The home team were victorious when their school, Singlegate in Colliers Wood, emerged victorious.

The tournament, now in its third year, is a bid by Merton Council to get more people into the sport.

Dennis Roll, a long-time member of Merton Park Bowling Club, said: “It is a great game for all ages although it is largely associated with older players. It’s one of the few sports where a 60 year-old can still give a 16 year-old a run for their money on the green.

“We’re always happy to welcome new players regardless of ability and it’s great to see the children playing today.
