Residents of 10,000 homes in Wandsworth now have access to some of the fastest connection speeds in London as 'super-fast' broadband has arrived.

Wandsworth Council said hose living on several estates can sign up for the service, which includes two sheltered housing schemes, under the ‘Gigafast’ broadband initiative.

People in the Savona, Patmore, Carey Gardens, Doddington, Kambala, Rollo, Surrey Lane, Winstanley and York Road, Ashburton, Arndale and William Willison estates can access it.

Within the next few weeks Doris Emmerton Court and Homleight Court sheltered schemes will join them as well.

Download speeds have clocked over 1,000 megabits per second (Mbit/s), which is roughly 47 times faster than the 22.8 Mbit/s UK average, according to Ofcom figures published by Wandsworth Council.

The service costs £50 per month to subscribe to and other packages are available for residents who do not need a full speed service which begin at £20.

Councillor Clare Salier, the council’s housing spokeswoman, said: “Fast, reliable broadband is not a luxury – these days it’s a necessity.

“We want Wandsworth to be London’s most connected borough and this ultrafast service means people living on our estates can truly make the most of fast online access and all the benefits that brings.”

Optical fibre cables are installed directly into people’s homes instead of copper technology which has been used previously.

Wandsworth Council and Community Fibre Ltd aim to roll out the scheme to 20,000 homes over the coming years.
