The quirkiest and most popular dog names at Battersea Dogs & Cats Home have been revealed.

Names were compiled into a top five list for both male and female dogs, and a winner for the most peculiar dog and cat names were unveiled.

The winner of the most unusual dog name for 2017 is Black Trouser, a ‘smiley’ six-month-old mongrel who arrived at the centre in March.

While his original owners could not care for him, he has since been renamed Fudge and rehomed.

Next up is Captain Gary Ziltoid, an eight-week-old puppy who also joined the Battersea home in March.

In third is Peewee, a Jack Russell cross who weighed just 2.8 kilos and was one of the smallest to arrive this year.

Meanwhile, the cats also had a stake to claim.

One-eyed feline Captain Cat Sharrow takes first place, while the sophisticated tortoiseshell Debbie Hairy finishes runner-up and three-legged Mr Wobbles rounds off the top three.

Robert Young, Battersea Dogs & Cats Home’s centre manager said: “Our staff name all the strays that are brought into Battersea, but two thirds of the dogs and cats that arrive here are brought in by their owners, who can no longer look care for them.

“These pets already have names of their own, and we’ve certainly seen some unusual ones over the years- including a Staffie named Lord Farquaad and a cat called Beetlejuice.

“Considering we care for more than 7,000 animals each year, it’s inevitable that there will be a few quirky names among them and we’re always on the lookout for the next unusual entrant.”

The top five most popular male dog names for 2017 were Max, Alfie, Rocky, Buster and Charlie.

Bella, Roxie (also spelled Roxy), Rosie, Coco and Daisy were the most popular female canines.
