Faster broadband is coming to Wandsworth, Roehampton and Battersea and people have the chance to sign up now.

In collaboration with Community Fibre Ltd, Wandsworth Council is aiming to provide more than 10,000 homes with the service by the end of this year.

The scheme is looking to install ‘Gigfast’ broadband in council-managed blocks, and more than 5,500 homes in the Savona, Patmore, Carey Gardens, Doddington, Kambala, Rollo and Surrey Lane have the capacity to access it.

Next to receive it are Winstanley and York Road estates, alongside St James and the Ashburton, Wendlesworth, Arndale, William Willison and Alton, with the work being undertaken over the next few months.

The ‘Gigfast’ service is said to clock download speeds of more than 1,000 megabits per second (Mbit/s), which is roughly 47 times faster than the UK average (22.8Mbit/s), according to Ofcom, using optical fibre cables that are installed directly into people’s homes compared to old copper technology.

The long-term aim is to provide more than 20,000 homes across the borough with access to the broadband over the next few years.

It costs £40 per month to subscribe, and there are other services for residents who do not need a full speed service, and customers do not need to pay a line rental charge either.

Councillor Claire Salier, spokesperson for housing, said: “Ultrafast broadband means residents on our estates will be able to use multiple device, easily work from home or run a small business, stream as much media as they want and truly make the most of fast online access.

“I’m delighted that our partnership with Community Fibre has already connected so many homes, and I would urge residents on the next wave of estates to find out what this service could offer them.”
