Daniel De Gale, whose fight against leukaemia inspired hundreds of Afro-Caribbean people to donate bone marrow, has died.
The 21-year-old was diagnosed with leukaemia in 1993 aged six, and a lack of black donors meant the odds of finding a match were 250,000-to-one.
He died from an illness unrelated to cancer.

I just wanted to say what a fantastic tribute you did on Daniel Thursday 9 October 2008.
I am so glad that you managed to do a tribute to Daniel regarding his life and also the legacy he leaves behind. Daniel spent his life raising awareness for the National Blood Service and the Bone Marrow Donor register. I would like to think that your article raised awareness and that others will no longer be ignorant and give blood on a regular basis and be on the donor register.
The black and mixed community should not have to fight such a hard battle to find a donor match.
I would like to think that Daniel's legacy will one day turn these figures around. While he was alive the figures decreased from 1 in 250,000 to 1 in 100,000 if you are black or mixed race finding a bone marrow donor. I would like to think that his legacy will decrease these figures even more as this is the only justification for me to comprehend why he is gone as I feel he was taken to young.
Daniels beautiful smile will shine over the ACLT and it would be great if the Guardian could help raise the awareness.
The next registration drive details are below:
