Sam Metcalf could teach the rest of us a thing or two about attendance.

The 10-year-old has not missed a day of school in his life, and is soon to be honoured for his achievement.

If he can keep colds and flu at bay for a few more weeks, Haslemere Primary School will present Sam with a platinum award for completing 18 terms - six years - without ever taking a day off.

As he has received an award for good attendance at the end of every term, he has already made his way through bronze, silver and gold.

Mum Clare puts Sam's success not down to a superhuman system, but sheer determination.

She said: "He gets incredibly tired towards the end of term, but he keeps going until the holidays.

But he's only got one more year left and his friends encourage him not to get ill.

"He enjoys school, especially sport and being with his friends.

"But the thought of getting the award is what drives him."

Sam, who lives in Bank Avenue in Mitcham, said: "I'm really happy, and my friends are too."

The school introduced the awards system several years ago to drive up attendance figures.

It seems to have worked, and many children pick up a certificate at the end of each term.

But no one else is quite in Sam's league.

Headteacher Bob Shearman said: "We are fantastically proud of Sam. He's a role model for others and a leading example of sustained excellent attendance.

"As he's now reached platinum, we're worried about what award to give him if he makes it through 21 terms.

"We'll be venturing into the unknown."
